Pick of the day: The Great British Bake Off: The Final

8pm, Channel 4

And then there were three, and perhaps the biggest surprise of this year's entire competition is the fact that Jürgen isn't one of them. The likeably modest German had looked unbeatable for most of the contest, but a patisserie-themed semi-final did for him. And so, we are left with Chigs, the least experienced baker ever to grace a final, capable Giuseppe, and Crystelle, with her miraculous ability to fall about laughing at every one of Noel and Matt's flights of fancy. Standing between them and the winner's branded cake stand are an exquisitely decorated carrot cake, 12 Belgian buns and a Mad Hatter's tea party-inspired showstopper.

Who Do You Think You Are?

9pm, BBC One

Actor, YouTuber and former Strictly finalist Joe Sugg sees himself as "a proper country bumpkin from the depths of Wiltshire". There might also be a French connection, he believes, as he explores the life of "grandfather times three" Albert, a Victorian telegraph engineer who was involved in sending the first telegram between London and the Channel Islands. "It's like looking an antique tweet," he says, surveying the message. Jersey is where the French connection comes in, while his sister Zoe (Zoella to the YouTube-savvy) also does some research into the family tree, tracing a different branch of it back to a family of goldsmiths during the time of the Great Fire of London.

The Great Escape: A Daring Plan

9pm, Channel 5

Channel 5 recently showed an unexpectedly superb series about the D-Day landings, and the broadcaster returns to the Second World War with this new three-part documentary series about the audacious wartime prison break immortalised in the classic 1963 film The Great Escape, during which 76 men tunnelled out of a German prisoner-of-war camp in March 1944. The opening instalment reveals how the captive Allied soldiers set about building three huge and structurally impressive tunnels – famously named Tom, Dick and Harry – and preparing 200 men for escape from Stalag Luft III.

Miriam And Alan: Lost In Scotland

9.15pm, Channel 4

It's all about midges as Miriam Margolyes and Alan Cumming continue their jolly motorhome jaunt by heading for the Highlands. While Margolyes produces a netted hat similar to that worn by beekeepers, she also visits an "ethno-botanist" who shows her how to manufacture a natural herb-based essential oil to keep the biting insects at bay. Cumming sails across Loch Broom, allegedly in search of a house where he can grow old as "an eccentric Scottish loch-side recluse" – the duo reuniting to visit a witch and "commune with the divine," and fail to take a ski-lift up the side of a Glencoe mountain.

Stath Lets Flats

10.15pm, Channel 4

Is this episode of Jamie Demetriou's sitcom, its equivalent of the Christmas party in The Office, the one in which the knockabout comedy took on deeper levels of pathos? The spark here is the discovery of a shaky eight-year-old video recording that included Carole, Al and Dean's job interviews – as well as the first lettings visit by an alarmingly long-haired Stath. The scales fall from the agents' eyes as they realise just how they've wasted the preceding eight years, but at least one couple makes up for lost time. Could Al and Sophie finally have their Tim-and-Dawn moment? Al Roberts, Natasia Demetriou, Katy Wix and Christos Stergioglou co-star.
